Is my boiler repair quote fair? An Essex guide

What south Essex engineers publish
We looked for local Gas Safe firms that put their call-out or first-hour rate on their own website. As of 22 October 2026:
| Engineer | Published repair charge | VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Basildon Gas Safe engineer (1) | One page: £65 call-out, £80 an hour. Another: first hour £65, then £80 an hour in 30-minute steps | Not stated |
| Basildon (Bowers Gifford) Gas Safe firm (2) | Repairs/call-out from £90; emergency call-out from £120 | Not stated |
| Southend (Leigh-on-Sea) Gas Safe firm (3) | £95 + VAT first hour, diagnostics included; parts priced before fitting | + VAT |
| Rochford Gas Safe firm (4) | £110 + VAT call-out (normal hours), £180 + VAT out of hours, plus a £60 diagnostic fee; fees confirmed by text or email before attending | + VAT |
| Chelmsford Gas Safe firm (5) | £130 inc. VAT first hour, then £32.50 per 15 minutes; no separate call-out fee | Included |
| Southend (Leigh-on-Sea) multi-trade firm (6) | "No call-out charge"; repairs from £98 per half hour | Not stated |
Prices taken from firms' own published rates, checked 22 October 2026 and re-checked 23 October 2026. Firms are named only once they've agreed. Spotted an error? Email hello@fairquoteessex.co.uk.
Notice how differently the same thing is priced. A £65 call-out, a £95 first hour with diagnosis included, and £98 per half hour with "no call-out charge" can all end up at similar bills for a one-hour fix, or very different ones for a three-hour job. Compare the likely total for your job, not the headline.
Decode your quote
- Call-out or attendance fee: a charge for turning up. It often covers the first 30–60 minutes. Ask whether it comes off the bill if you go ahead.
- Diagnostic fee: time spent finding the fault. The advertising regulator's guidance says a "diagnostic" or "assessment" fee you pay when you don't go ahead counts as a call-out charge. So a firm advertising "no call-out charge" shouldn't charge you for that first diagnosis if you decline the work.
- Labour: hourly or fixed. Ask for the estimated hours.
- Parts: ask for the part name and number so you can see what it retails for. A reasonable mark-up covers sourcing and warranty, so don't expect trade price.
- VAT: is it included? Smaller sole traders may not be VAT-registered.
A quote that's one large number with no breakdown isn't necessarily a rip-off. But you're entitled to ask what it covers before you agree.
Red flags
- A "no call-out charge" ad, then a diagnosis fee when you decline the work.
- No itemised breakdown when you ask, or a refusal to name the faulty part.
- Pressure to agree on the doorstep, or "this price is only valid today".
- Being told the boiler must be replaced, with no explanation of which part failed and why repair doesn't make sense. Ask what a repair would cost, then get a second opinion.
- Anyone quoting a "CORGI number". CORGI was replaced by Gas Safe Register in 2009.
- A national-looking ad that sends a subcontractor. Ask who's actually coming, then check that person's card.
Before anyone touches the boiler: the Gas Safe check
Gas work in your home must, by law, be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is qualified for that type of work.
- Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card. Check the photo, the expiry date and the seven-digit licence number.
- Turn it over. The back lists the work they're qualified to do. Make sure boilers (or your appliance type) are on it.
- Check it independently with the "Check an engineer" tool at gassaferegister.co.uk, or by calling 0800 408 5500.
- A photo of an old card proves nothing. Cards are reissued every year and the licence number changes each time.
Smell gas? Leave the property, don't touch electrical switches, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 (England, Scotland and Wales, 24 hours, free).
Two checks before you call anyone
- Low pressure: if the gauge reads below about 1 bar, your manual will show how to top it up to between 1 and 2 bar using the filling loop.
- Frozen condensate pipe in a cold snap: the boiler shuts down for safety, and thawing the pipe can fix it.
Never open the boiler casing yourself.
Should you just get boiler cover?
In Which?'s June 2025 survey, people paid an average of £183 a year for cover, against about £79 for a one-off service. Which? found that for most people, paying for services and repairs as they come works out cheaper over several years. Cover can still make sense if a surprise bill of a few hundred pounds would be hard to find.
